DPP Issue #5

I'm not a subscriber of Digital Photographer Philippines (DPP) magazine but I'm a collector. I have all the issues except #5 & #7. I made it known to all members of the DPP online forum that I'm willing to pay P500.00 (each) for a used copy of 5 & 7.

Yesterday, to my surprise!, I received #5 via LBC with a handwritten note from Nick Tuason, DPP's Editor, that my copy is for free and that they will keep a lookout for #7. All I have to do, he said, is to spread the word about DPP. Well, that's easy considering that DPP is very well known among the photo community because of its world-class print & content quality.

Domou arigatou, more power to DPP!!!

My 2nd work to be published

As printed in i-Mag Photography magazine Vol. 1 No. 11 (October Issue)

Anyway, using my last blog entry as reference, we got back our TV after 3 working days. Fortunately, the lightning only blew up a fuse, diode and a capacitor - just minor parts. Good news indeed!

Lightning Strike

Around 8:30 last night, there was a loud & nerve-wracking lightning strike near our home and it killed our TV set.

Anyway, I'll be bringing the set tomorrow to Sony Repair Center. This blog entry serves as my record in monitoring the repair leadtime.

Off-camera Flash Photography

As I long for freedom, I ditched Nikon's SC-28 flash cord and went wireless with GadgetInfinity's cheapo V2s Trigger set. I modified the trigger board a bit to increase its open-air range and here's a shot when cover is open:

And here are sample shots I took last week:

Can you make a guess on the location of the flash in each image?

DIY SB-600 Diffuser

As mentioned in my previous blog entry, shown below is my DIY diffuser. Material used is a plastic binding cover (bought in National Bookstore). This plastic has 2 surface finish: coarse & smooth. For the inner side of the diffuser, I used the coarse side so as to have consistent 'scattering' of light.

Again, I would like to emphasize that you'll only use a diffuser when you have (preferably white) walls or ceilings around you. Otherwise, you'll look stupid for trying to bounce/diffuse light off the clouds (now what if it's a cloudless day?). Seriously, you're just wasting power.

If you really need to use flash outdoors, you can do the following:

1) Bounce light off a reflector.
2) Use as fill light (during bright daylight)
3) Use your flash off-camera via extension cord or an RF trigger system.

Remember, photography is basically lights & shadows.

Nikon SB-600

Last week, I sold my Nikon SB-400 Speedlight, Sto-fen OM-400 Diffuser, & Nikon SC-28 Cord and upgraded to Nikon SB-600. I hate this addiction syndrome! ;-)

Anyway, for this model, I won't be buying a diffuser (P1,200). Instead, I'll make my own. I'll post the result later.

=============

The challenge now is to find time to digest all the wonderful & useful contents. Some of these books were just xerox copies/printed from an eBook format. I then had them professionally bookbounded.

However, I'm focused with Harry Potter Book 7 this week so everything else is slowed down.

Bulak para sa akong hinigugma

For you, my Fudge...

Tamrac Velocity 8x

Finally, my photography kit now includes a decent bag. Previously, I was just using a generic all-purpose bag - it's not padded and stuff inside easily gets tangled. I used it because it doesn't look like a camera bag.

Yesterday, I bought a black Tamrac Velocity 8x. It looks cool and still doesn't look like a camera bag. I tried stuffing my whole kit (save the tripod) and there's still room left for a souvenir or two.
