December 7, 2006

Today is my last working day for 2006. Yipiiiiiiii!

----

I'm now at 196 pounds (88.9 kilogram) but the parties lined up during the coming vacation will sure pose a great challenge. Wish me luck!

Happy holidays, everyone!

New member of the Suello family

What a stressful apartment transfer! It's almost 2 weeks now and the place is still in chaos though we love it there.

So to make matters more challenging, we took in 'Cookie', a 5-month old 6.4kg Rottweiler-Beagle female dog. She's quite spoiled but she's fast learning the basic house rules.

She had her 1st vaccination shot yesterday and was quite subdued during the whole process. Maybe the presence of monster dogs (pure rottweilers, labradors) in the clinic has something to do with it. She'll have her 2nd shot 3 weeks from now and the last one for yet another 3 weeks. Then she'll have her annual anti-rabies & deworming shots.

Anyway, our company's last working day for 2006 is on Dec. 7. So it means that I'll have a 25-day vacation this holiday season. Wohoo!!!

Fudge and I will now start our gift shopping this weekend. How do I sneak in a digital SLR without her noticing? hehehehehehe

What a week, so far!

Tomorrow is move-out day. Hopefully, the weather will have pity on us.

What a task outpour from Spain! My team is creaking now...

Anyway, I'm at 202 lbs now. Wow!

[kawr-nuh-koh-pee-nyuh]

I'm 30 now and I believe that I'm on the right path.

This year is my 9th year as a professional (read: employee). 9 years!?!, it's my highschool & college time spent put together, wow. Time sure flies fast.

9 years. Can you believe it?

NBA Season 2006-07 launches tomorrow and my fantasy teams are now bursting with energy. My inaugural team in NBA.com's Salary Cap Challenge is composed of Ricky Davis, Raymond Felton, Elton Brand, Shawn Marion, Jumaine Jones, and Rasho Nesterovic. For this season, I'll be joining 3 games offered by NBA.com (I didn't qualify in NBA.com Premier Fantasy).

***

My PBA team, Talk 'N Text PhonePals, is on a 2-game losing streak now. They slid to 4th place in the elimination round standings and it's quite clear that they still need to work a LOT on team defense. I watched their game against SLR and since it was a delayed telecast, I was treated to a 12-point loss at 12.30 am yesterday.

Pals, go, go, go!!!

I know, i know - Christmas vacation is still 53 days away but what do we lose if we bought these 'kets in advance? I guess this is because we never went home in the province last Christmas... Plus buying online is very comfortable.

Found an apartment yesterday. Fudge and I will move there within 2 weeks.

Starter's Kit

FireFox 2.0 is nice although it uses 55MB of RAM while I'm blogging now. I opened the same window in IE 7 and it uses only 10MB (I switched my blog draft to IE7 and memory usage is still 10MB). I wonder what they meant by low-resource requirement of FireFox 2.0... I guess this is another marketing crap. Or, maybe XP is conspiring with IE7 in showing the real figures hehehehe gotcha!

(Why do people hate MS so much???)

-----

Just learn today that the lens included in a lens kit is not really recommended for advanced users. Basic lens kit is literally a starter's kit & I'm not a starter anymore.

So to get my blood flow rolling, I asked around and discovered that a good lens starts at P22,000 (!!!). Holy sh.... cow!, that's already 50% compared to a brand new 400D body!

Definitely this will be a lifelong hobby of mine: a body then a zoom lens 1 year later, then a set of filters a year later, then a 8GB high-speed card a year later, then a powerful external flash 2 years later, then a prime lens (30mm) 2 years later, then another prime lens (300mm) 2 years later, and finally another body 3 years after that.

Trivia: Symbol & Electron Flow

Today, I learn who caused the 'mess' on current flow & symbol confusion. At last.

Benjamin Franklin, that's who.

As shown in the diagram, actual current or electron flow is counter-clockwise. But because of earlier (naive) assumption by Ben, current symbol standard (diode, for example) follows the wrong flow.

But this is trivial, really. Conventional wisdom still works.

Police Invisibility

The other night, I was surprised to see 3 policemen hanging around near our place. Not that we need more security; our place is located just outside Mactan Air Force Base that has regular patrol. But I'm glad to see 'em nonetheless.

Police personnel from Luzon & Mindanao are really swarming Metro Cebu nowadays in preparation for the ASEAN Summit this December. As they are assigned in almost major street corners, traffic is a bit smoother because of minimized 'illegal' PUJ loading & unloading and locals feel a sense of security. Law-abiding locals that is.

Recently, vigilante-related killing now rises, rather quickly, to 172 since December 2004. See News 1 & News 2. To the conspiracy theorists, it seems very clear now that these 'vigilantes' have an inside connection as they still operate with impunity. It seems they know the daily patrol and surveillance routines and they stand over the city like a deranged wife over a cowering husband.

Not that I'm against these 'vigilantes' but I hope that they change their focus to the 'big fish'. Come on, give 'em small-timers a break!

Simple Pleasures

Just want to post it here so that someday I can use this as reference.

Currently playing:

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Soon to be playing:

Half-life 2: Episode 1
Heroes of Might & Magic 5
Titan Quest
Sid Meier's Pirates
Company of Heroes

By the way, today is my 7th day on Herbalife Shake Diet. I'm now down to 212lbs from 217lbs. I'll try to make it through a month and see if it really works.

My 'darting' is currently on-hold as stuff like PC games, Prison Break S2, movies, etc. really takes away my focus and dedication. I'll try to play a 10-game leg this weekend.

Here's my updated DVD Library.

Bon cap de setmana!

Goal Highway

Today, I declined a job offer from a promising organization in Metro Manila. From a financial point of view, their offer is twice my current salary plus benefits (stock options, allowances, 4-year guaranteed contract, etc.). Actually, I declined them twice now.

Fudge & I agreed that this is just one of the temptations that will try to take us away from our main goal.

We will achieve that goal and time will tell.

Cebu Pacific e-Ticket

Yesterday, I bought my 1st ever online e-Ticket and I'm now holding the printout. Since I'm in Philippines, let's just hope that there will be no issues this monday when I get to the airport. I'll keep you posted. Bon cap de setmana!

Career-best (so far)

I had a great dart session (170 FIDO) last night. 10-game average is 17.3 with a career-best of 7. Wohoo! I hope the trend continues tonight.

In another topic, I attended a 3-day Synergistic Leadership training-workshop last week. For the 1st time in my adult life, somebody was able to carry my 215-lb frame (fireman's carry) and "rescue" me from the "landmine". I wasn't supposed to be "dead" but someone violated the game's rule while I was crossing the "landmine" so, kabooom!, I'm dead. Since the theme was to leave no one behind, Michael's adrenaline had to be released (in huge quantity hahaha). Thanks, Mike!

The workshop's great. I learned a lot and enabled me to put fuzzy things into clear sets of frame. One topic was about goals so, to start things off, my 1st written goal (shown to public) is to be at 200-lb by February 2007.

Let's play Darts!

Road to Pro begins.

Catchy line, huh? Well, that's what I'm calling this journey of mine and I hope things will turn out well.

Instead of a complete set, I ended up buying a separate board and dart set. Total cost is higher but I still prefer Pinoy & British-made stuff over Chinese-made cr#p. I just hope "Made in England" means just that. Who knows?

I logged about 6 hours over the weekend. My performance sucks as expected and I'm having a hard time shampooing myself and brushing my teeth with my right arm for 2 days now. Hopefully, the muscle ache will go down by tomorrow.

I monitored my "170" performance (15 FIFO games) and my average is 15.07 throws (or 11.28 points per dart). A totally ridiculously bad performance.

For my practice, I'll use "170 FIDO" and "round-the-board" games. I expect to increase my performance level to 20 points per dart by November. Wish me luck ;-)

Some interesting dart trivia here.

Hobby Q4 2006

This weekend, I'll be buying a dartboard set. This set costs P2,000. I want to be serious with this hobby/sport.

The last time I played darts was during my college days. It was mainly for fun and bets were minimal -- a liter of softdrinks or a P20-pizza. I consider my skill average but I'm competitive by nature. I'll try to monitor my performance and see if I really have "it". Otherwise...

I'll continue my interrupted life on photography. My ancient FujiFilm FinePix 2600Z 2.0MP digital camera is physically crumbling though it still gives excellent p&s quality pictures. I guess its retirement is near so I'm now sniffing for D-SLRs. My candidates are Canon EOS 400D (TBD), 350D (P43k), 300D (P35k), and maybe cheap prosumers from Nikon and Sony (suggestions are very much welcome!). I'll propose to my commander a P45k budget.

To be honest, I'm torn between a digital video camera and D-SLR. Price range is the same but I just can't have both of them right now. Hmmmmm...

2006 Cebu ASEAN Summit & Terrorism

ASEAN Summit is fast approaching (13 weeks to go!) and security preparation in and around Metro Cebu is gaining momentum. Construction at the summit site is feverish albeit bets are everywhere on whether the site will be fully completed or not in time for this important event. I passed by the site last weekend and site activity is, well, last-minute Filipino style. I'm not familiar with construction industry so don't take my observation seriously but I hope everything's up to national building standards. Otherwise...

Security personnel and checkpoints are increasing in number. This resulted to decreased vigilante killings and a sense of security in the populace (the good populace that is). However...

Today, 5th year Anniversary of 9/11, an explosion rocked the city of Mandaue. There are fatalities though the officials are playing down this issue. I don't blame them. With the summit just around the corner, Metro Cebu doesn't need this headache. I expect intensified intelligence monitoring and mobile patrol visibility.

I just don't know when will the proposed 5-day ASEAN Summit holiday (Dec. 4-9) be finalized. Just imagine a 5-week Christmas vacation. That will be awesome!
